2019 The Guernsey Event Company Limited

The Guernsey Symphony Orchestra (GSO) was founded in 1991 with the aims of developing orchestral music in all its forms for the benefit and advancement of musicians and the appreciation and enjoyment of concert audiences.

To achieve this, the Trustees and Management Committee engage the services of amateur and professional musicians including soloists and conductors, and currently produce three ambitious concerts each year, usually in March/April, July and November.

“The GSO is thrilled to be part of 2018 Proms on the Pier: our third performance at this unique outdoor musical evening in Guernsey at the end of the summer.  We look forward to taking the Guernsey public  on a magic carpet ride of pure and simple enjoyment as they watch and listen to the GSO performing on the giant Ali Dome on Albert Pier on Saturday 8 September – don’t miss it!”

Tim Wright, Chairman, Guernsey Symphony Orchestra

Each concert that is created and performed by the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra in Guernsey features an independent conductor of international acclaim – bringing a different dimension of excellence to the GSO concerts.

Hong-Kong born Jonathan Lo will be in Guernsey specifically for the GSO’s outdoor concert at 2018 Proms on the Pier.  Jonathan is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra as well as Principal Conductor of the New Bristol Sinfonia and the Haffner Orchestra.

Born in 1987, Jonathan read music at Oxford University before going on to study conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music on a scholarship, graduating with distinction and winning the Mortimer Furber Prize in conducting contemporary music.

Jonathan was appointed to his first music directorship whilst at university, when he was appointed to the Oxford University Philharmonia after winning the University’s conducting competition aged 18.  Jonathan’s career has included conducting orchestras internationally and nationally most notably the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Rambert Orchestra, the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Manchester Camarata, the Northern Chamber Orchestra and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

2018/2019 highlights include Jonathan’s debut with Northern Ballet, conducting the world-premiere of Cathy Marston’s Victoria, debut with the BBC Philharmonic, as well as returning to Birmingham Royal Ballet for productions of La Fille mal Gardée and King Dances, and to Scottish Ballet for Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella.

Plus his visit to Guernsey for GSO’s 2018 Proms on the Pier concert on Saturday 8 September 2018.
